My Code of Restoration Ethics
by Mary B. Lytle
Copyright © 1995-2002 by Mary B. Lytle. All rights reserved.

I will repair and restore antique bisque and china utilizing only ethical conservation techniques.

  • "Ethical conservation techniques" means that all restoration procedures will meet strict standards for stability, reversibility and minimal obscuration.

  • "Strict standards" means the standards accepted and followed by museum conservators.

  • "Stability" means that only durable materials, resistant to deterioration from such elements as UV rays, for example, will be used.

  • "Reversibility" means that, should the need ever arise, it will be possible to return restored bisque and china to its original, pre-restoration status. The restoration process itself will do no additional harm.

  • "Minimal obscuration" means that restoration will be confined to the area of repair.

I will perform repairs and restorations with complete consideration given to conserving all the values – historic, aesthetic, sentimental, and monetary – of the object.

I will replace original doll parts (body parts, wigs, eyes, clothing, accessories, etc.) only when absolutely necessary. I will always seek to preserve the originality of the doll as much as possible. To that end, replacement parts will be antique duplicates when possible. New parts will replicate the antique originals as much as possible. I will never represent either original or replacement parts, antique or new, as anything other than what they are. I will return to my customer any and all parts replaced during repair and restoration unless they are specifically rejected by my customer.

I will inform my customer accurately of the effect that repair, restoration, and the replacement of parts will have on the historic and monetary value of the object.

I will inform my customer if the estimated cost of the repair and restoration exceeds the monetary value of the object.
